Understanding the problem

What is the problem?

Hi-Dive can be streamed on their website or using their app. The problem lies with the app. Since first releasing the app back in 2018, there has been no changes to the UI. This has caused a lot of problems  throughout their client base.

How Am I going to tackle this Problem

Look at user complaints and tackle the UI problems stated by users and update the UI to what is considered the standard for streaming apps.

The Problematic UI

The UI creates multiple problems from not having a home page, searching for shows to playback issues and lack of features. When it comes to streaming apps, the Hi-DIve streaming is bottom of the barrel.

User Ratings & Reviews

Out of 3,101 ratings the app has a rating of 1.9 out of 5 stars. With majority being 1 star reviews and this is only on the IOS App store. The ratings doesn’t come from what service they offer or the quality of the shows they are streaming. They are coming from how unusable the app is which in the end turns away users.

No skip button, no rewinding nor forwarding  button, you have to use the line to actually move to a spot, but it’s so bad...” -Diwen.GG
“The reason why this gets 2 stars; it’s because their apps on all platforms are very poorly designed.  The phone app is bad, but the console app is much,  MUCH worse.” - Dreamz125
Terribly designed app with no fix in sight” - Anonymous

With thousands of 1 star ratings and multiple reviews expressing dissatisfaction, its has become one of the lowest rated streaming app amongst other streaming app such as Crunchyroll, Funimation, Netflix, and etc. This creates a huge problem with people that watch anime on their mobile devices. This leaves a huge opportunity to gain subscribers simply because the design of the app is not user friendly.

Product Vision

Persona

With reading the multiples reviews and experiencing the app myself. I created a persona to create the design for. I create Marcus as the targeted user because I needed a user who can only use their mobile device and not their desktop/laptop

User Flow

Since I’m redesigning the app from scratch I needed to created a user flow that will get the user to the anime they want to watch as fast as possible. The user flow will also help me design the pages and remember key things I will need to include such as a search bar, account log in, browse pages, etc..

Sketches

Now that I had a persona to design for and a user flow to build the sketch layout; I used all the data I have collected and started to design an app to address all the problems users have come across. As you can see, every design I made, it had a purpose behind it.  I also designed this to fit IOS products.  I first tackled the overall layout and added in features such as the search icons, browsing options, and playback options,

Mid-Fidelity

After the sketches, I brought it over to figma and did small changes to fit spacing and to see if i missed anything in the initial sketches.

Style Guide

With this app redesign I wanted to keep a nice and simple style. I was more focused on the actual usability. The  the primary color was chosen simply because its the logos color, and it will create a sense of familiarity with the app and the company.  The same reasoning goes for the background tile.

Hi-Fi

Here are some screenshots of the High-fidelity mockups. I also created a prototype you can try out.

What's Next

The next step I would do is to do user testing. I need to know if the changes I made going to work with users. I need to see if there are things that need to be added or removed. If users can easily understand the interface with little to no instruction.  Another thing I would love to add is a genre page so users can search through that method.

Let’s create great designs that solve everything
